Road Safety Week opportunity to carry discipline, risk planning, vigilance behind the wheel
14 Wing Greenwood’s Transportation Section members are ready for national Road Safety Week, May 18 to 24. This year’s theme is “Drive to Arrive: Mission Mindset.”
Motor vehicle collisions continue to be one of the leading causes of injury and preventable loss within the Canadian Armed Forces community, both on and off duty. Although we demonstrate high levels of operational discipline in training and deployed environments, that same vigilance does not always carry over into our daily routines. Over time, familiarity and routine can lead to complacency. The discipline, focus and risk awareness we apply to operations must also guide our actions behind the wheel.
Drive to Arrive: Mission Mindset reinforces the principle that every journey is a mission. Whether operating a military vehicle, commuting to work or travelling with family, driving requires deliberate planning, defensive driving, situational awareness, sound risk assessment and disciplined execution. Just as we prepare for and carry out tasks in an operational environment, we must approach driving with the same professionalism and commitment to safety.
Key messages
- strengthen a culture of disciplined driving by emphasizing personal responsibility, situational awareness and effective risk management behind the wheel
- safe vehicle operation is a shared responsibility: individual actions directly impact the safety of passengers, other road users and the public
- unit leadership is reminded of their management responsibilities to actively promote road safety, ensure compliance with applicable policies and regulations, and support initiatives that enhance driver awareness and performance
