Three talented athletes from the Greenwood Skating Club took to the ice on a larger stage as they head to the Atlantic Canadian Skating Championships (ACSC), set for March 27 to 29 in Paradise, Newfoundland.
Representing both their club and Skate Nova Scotia, Cassie Johnson, Layla Brewer and Sola Thomas earned their spots at last month’s Skate Nova Scotia Provincials in Amherst, where each skater delivered strong performances to place within the top six of their respective categories.
Leading the trio is Johnson, a seasoned senior skater whose experience and consistency have made her a standout within the club. She has competed at provincials nine times across various Star program levels and is no stranger to the Atlantic stage – this will mark her third appearance at the championships. Johnson will compete in two events: Star 7 O14 Women and Star 8 Women’s Free. Coming off an impressive season that includes four podium finishes, highlighted by her latest a bronze medal in Star 7, she enters the competition with confidence and momentum.
Brewer will be making her ACSC debut. A dedicated skater who has represented Greenwood at provincials’ multiple times, Brewer’s qualification marks an exciting milestone in her skating journey. She captured a silver medal earlier this season for her Star 5 program at the Winter Skate in February and carried that success into provincials. Her expressive and technically strong Star 5 O13 Free Skate secured her a top-six finish, earning her the opportunity to compete in Newfoundland.
Rounding out the team is Thomas, the club’s newest qualifier and one of its rising stars. This season marked her first appearance at provincials, competing at the Star 5 level, the entry point for ACSC qualification. In her second year of the Star program, Thomas has progressed rapidly, demonstrating remarkable commitment and passion. Her recent achievement of landing her Axel jump, combined with a bronze medal performance at provincials, signals a promising future.
The Greenwood Skating Club is proud to see all three athletes represent their community club at this prestigious regional event.
