Greenwood returns to regional rock throwing

14 Wing Greenwood is ready to throw some rocks again, after a hole in the local curling environment since 2024.

That year, the Greenwood Curling Club hosted the Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic region championship tournament, even fielding two teams. In 2025, Greenwood missed attending regionals, with several key players posted away, in the process of posting or unavailable due to operational requirements (such is military sport).

At the start of the 2025/ 2026 curling season last Fall, with the Greenwood rink closed earlier in the year, 14 Wing’s military curlers found a new home with the Berwick Curling Club’s Sunday evening recreational league. Personnel Support Program sports funding covered the team registration for eight curlers.

“And we were fourth through the round robin: we played the first half of the league really well,” says Major Jeff McRae; the team made the league’s play-offs, too.

Through the Winter, the eight team members solidified into a core team of four regulars – again, work commitments saw some of the originals unable to regularly commit. Meeting a fellow league curler, though, posted at 5 Canadian Division Support base Detachment Aldershot means the Greenwood four heading to CAF regionals are travelling with a fifth player.

Representing 14 Wing at regionals March 11 to 13, hosted by 12 Wing Shearwater, will be Captain Paul Bailey, Corporal Tyrell Keicks, Corporal Justin Sudsbear and McRae; with Warrant Officer Matthew Spinney, from Aldershot.
