February 23 to 27, 2 Canadian Air Division conducted an air combat systems officer (ACSO) trial and information week at 12 Wing Shearwater and 14 Wing Greenwood. Eight prospective ACSO students from across Canada participated in the initiative, designed to provide a deeper understanding of the ACSO occupation, and the aircraft and communities associated with the trade. The activity aimed to strengthen participant motivation, enhance career awareness, and foster a clearer understanding of the diverse employment opportunities available within the trade.
Throughout the week, participants engaged in community briefs, squadron visits and hands-on exposure to operational environments. Representatives from the long range patrol, search and rescue maritime helicopter and electronic warfare communities presented their respective roles, capabilities, aircraft characteristics and work considerations. These sessions offered participants valuable insight into the expectations and realities of each operational pathway.
The future ACSOs observed day-to-day operations, interacted with experienced ACSOs and aircrew, and asked questions related to training, readiness and career progression during visits to 406 (Operational Training Flight) Squadron, 404 (Long Range Patrol and Training) Squadron, 405 (Long Range Patrol) Squadron and 413 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron.
“Participants received an orientation on the ACSO training pipeline and had dedicated time in the CP140 Aurora Procedural Crew Trainer, where they were able to gain familiarity with mission systems, crew coordination and platform-specific procedures,” said organizer Captain Ihor Babiak. “In addition, familiarization flights with 405 Squadron and 413 Squadron provided an operational context that reinforced the value and impact of the ACSO role within the Royal Canadian Air Force.
“These visits are an important part of welcoming our newest members and those awaiting training, providing them meaningful and positive experiences that motivates and inspires future ACSOs.”
