Greenwood teams miss in must-win regional action

Both 14 Wing Greenwood’s men’s and women’s teams found themselves in must-win situations by Game 2 of their 2025 Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic region tournaments.

In a shortened schedule, with all three teams in both divisions needing at least one win – preferably two – to move into their final, the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown Warriors, in both cases, ended Greenwood teams’ advance.

14 Wing Greenwood’s women’s soccer team opened its regionals August 18, meeting the combined CFB Halifax/ 12 Wing Shearwater at Dartmouth’s Harbour East field. The first half saw Halifax, the 2024 regional champions, go up 3-0 with the wind in their favour. In the second, Greenwood played hard, with its mix of seasoned and recent add-on athletes doing more than the eventual 5-0 loss might indicate.

In the morning game August 19, Greenwood’s women’s team took a 2-1 loss to Gagetown. It was 1-0 at the half, then Gagetown went up early in the second on a penalty kick. Greenwood’s goal – a beautiful cross from Captain Sophia King to Captain Danielle Beland for the point – came in the last 10 to 15 minutes, launching a big push for the equalizer – but no luck. Team captains Corporal Kayla Maye and Beland, with the team for four years and posted next month, were the team’s picks for MVPs, and Second Lieutenant Jazmyn Creamer was amazing in nets.

14 Wing’s men’s team opened its tournament August 19, meeting Halifax mid-morning. Halifax came out exceptionally strong, with quick and skilled players. By halftime, Halifax held a commanding 7-1 lead, with Greenwood’s lone goal scored by Aviator Henry Goupil. The second half told a different story, as Greenwood responded with intensity and energy, playing to a 2–2 draw in the half. Both Greenwood goals were scored by Corporal Simon Landry, bringing the final score to 9-3 in favour of Halifax.

The men’s team then met up with Gagetown August 20 for their second match. Starting strong, bounces didn’t go Greenwood’s way from the get-go, and Gagetown took a 4-1 win. Greenwood’s single came from Padre Captain Magnus Chilaka.

Gagetown and Halifax’s women’s teams met August 20 for the final, while the men’s teams met August 21. Both hometown teams went home happy, as the women won gold 3-0 over Gagetown, and the men defeated Gagetown 3-2. Women’s nationals will be September 15 to 19 and men’s nationals September 20 to 24, both at CFB Borden.
