Four 14 Wing Greenwood golfers joined Team Atlantic September 9 to 11 at the Canadian Armed Forces Sports nationals, hosted at CFB Borden. A tough course seemed to take two of three rounds to get a handle on, but there was hardware at the end.
September 9, in round 1, the course’s fast greens and narrow fairways set the challenge. Greenwood’s Corporal Tyler Currie started strong with a 38 on the front nine, but had a tough back nine with a 47 to shoot an 85. He finished Day 1 tied for 21st. Master Corporal Todd McAvoy went 45 – 43 to shoot an 88, tying for 27th. Corporal Joliane Laforce shot a 98 and sat tied for sixth, and Major Mary Cameron-Kelly shot a 103.
Round 2 September 10 saw McAvoy play 39-41 to shoot an 80, moving up in the overall ranking to 20th after two rounds. Currie shot 48-41 for an 89, and dropped to 31st. Laforce shot a 49-53 for a 102, and moved to eighth, while Cameron Kelly shot a 46-48 for a 94 to rise to seventh.
In the final round September 11, the first two rounds’ work paid off, as Greenwood golfers had good last rounds. On the men’s side, Team Atlantic overcame an eight-stroke deficit heading into the last day to win the silver medal. McAvoy shot an 80 to finish 18th, and Currie shot an 83 to finish 23rd. Team Atlantic’s women won the bronze medal, with Cameron Kelly’s 91 to finish sixth, and Laforce shooting a 93 to finish eighth.
