Cadets on the ground as Greenwood CTC offers summer programming

,

The first wave of 100 Cadets who will spend the summer at 14 Wing Greenwood arrived June 6, as 44 staff Cadets started work with the Greenwood Cadet Training Centre (CTC) in preparation for the full complement’s arrival, starting July 6.

Cadet students from coast to coast will participate in four separate courses: Introduction to Fitness and Sports, and Aviation Technology and Aerospace, two-week courses July 7 to 18, as well as two month-long courses, Advanced Aviation and Fitness and Sports Instructor, July 22 to August 17. In addition to programming such as flight and weapons simulations, swimming and physical training, Greenwood’s Cadet students will take part in a variety of special activities, including wing and Greenwood Military Aviation Museum tours, a night sky star-gazing event, and a visit to Cape Split. Pilot Greg Hannem from 681 Tantramar Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron will also be flying his Cessna to 14 Wing in August to provide familiarization flights to the Advanced Aviation students.

For the Fitness and Sports courses, Greenwood CTC is organizing a trial of the new Cadet Fitness Program. The new program aims to give Cadets more freedom of choice during testing: while the old fitness program assessed Cadets on their push-up, sit up, and beep test abilities, the new assessment will include a timed one-mile run and three additional sections, where Cadets will choose from list of exercises to be graded on. The trial will take place throughout the summer, with the CTC submitting its feedback after the courses graduate. Data gathered during this trial will help determine final adjustments and amendments to the assessments, prior to the new fitness program’s official rollout.
