Two 14 Wing Greenwood-based soccer players attended a CISM Women’s Soccer training camp, hosted by Canadian Forces Base Kingston, in Ontario

14 Mission Support Squadron’s Replenishment Flight Corporal Kasee Selwood and Health Services management officer Captain Hilary Lundy (currently completing a post-grad), were among military athletes from across Canada meeting – many for the first time – for the nine-day training camp in March.

The camp was “a good balance between training and games,” says Lundy, a forward for the CISM team. Consisting of daily training sessions, seminars and games against high-quality opposition, the camp provided an “opportunity to come together as a team,” Selwood, a center-mid/ attacking player, says; an important aspect for the group, as it prepares for international matches in July and the Military World Championships in 2026.

It was both Selwood and Lundy’s first CISM Women’s Soccer experience. Selwood describes the camp as being an “overall enjoyable experience.

“All the players and staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and professional. It’s nice to meet other players and share common goals.”

Along with intense training, games, tactical/ game analyses, recovery sessions, nutritional seminars and more; it was great “being able to play with other women at a high level,” Lundy says.

Selwood and Lundy contributed to the team’s positive results in the RMC tournament and games against local opposition, including a tie with Queen’s University’s women’s team and a win over Ottawa TFC.

To Selwood and Lundy, the CISM camp was more than just a training camp.

“It’s an opportunity for women to get together from different trades across the military; an opportunity to gain leadership, experience and share with one another,” they agree.

CISM Sports, and the Canadian Armed Forces sports program, provide unique opportunities to connect and engage military members from different parts of the world through sport. CAF sports “provided me the opportunity to re-engage in sport,” Lundy says, after not playing for several years. She encourages others who may find themselves in a similar situation to reconnect with the sport they enjoy.

Overall, the CISM Women’s Soccer camp was a huge success for the team, and the Greenwood players. Learning, training and competing, the team improved its performance throughout the nine-day camp, furthering their preparations for upcoming competition.

It’s an “honour, representing my country on the national stage,” says Selwood: “playing my favourite sport, for my favourite country.”

N.S. military players make CAF vs RN Halifax friendly

Next up for Canadian CISM-level soccer is a CAF vs RN July match-up in Halifax. CISM Soccer Canada has organized the series for both its men’s and women’s teams against the Royal Navy, says CISM women’s team manager Major Kimberly O’Rourke.

“This event has been in the works for several months, including all the rigorous training by our athletes in preparation for competition. It is rare we have a partner nation come over for a combined military and sporting event, so this truly a pleasure!”

On the women’s side will be 14 Wing’s Health Services management officer Captain Hilary Lundy, Captain Syndey Buell, 144 Construction Engineering Flight, Pictou; team co-captain Lieutenant (Navy) Carrie Wood (CFB Halifax), regional captain Lieutenant (Navy) Kate Costello, and head coach – Naval Cadet Adam Wadden (CFB Halifax).

The men’s roster includes 14 Wing Greenwood’s Second Lieutenant Derek Gaudet and CFB Halifax’s Lieutenant (Navy) Jaidonn Freeland.

Games take place July 20, at 9 a.m. on Dalhousie University’s Wickwire Field and then 2 p.m. on the St. Mary’s University varsity field; July 23 at 2 p.m. at Harbour East in Dartmouth and July 26, at 2 p.m. at SMU and 6:30 p.m. at Harbour East.
