The first full season of 14 Wing Greenwood intersection bowling in a handful of years wrapped up April 30, with a day of round robin and play-off games.
Greenwood Bowling Centre supervisor Chris Zizek organized the five-pin intersection play, using “pins over average” (POA) scoring. Players from 415 (Long Range Patrol Force Development) Squadron dominated the league through two 10-week Fall and Winter rounds or four-member teams, meeting up with representatives from 14 Air Maintenance Squadron and the Deputy Wing Commander Branch, finishing first in overall points and helping set the averages for the play-offs.
For the play-off round-robin, 415 Squadron’s A, B and C teams took on the 14 AMS Busy Beavers and Pin Daddies, and the Deputy Wing Commander Branch team. As the day progressed, the results were all over the place from all teams but, at the end of the five games, the Busy Beavers had muscled their way to the top with +239 POA, forcing 415 Squadron Team C into second place, at +144 POA. The ranking continued with Deputy Wing Command at +45 POA, 415 Team A at +13 POA, the Pin Daddies at -1 POA and 415 Team B at – 61 POA.
This set up for a great set of final games, as 415 Squadron ended up having a team in each group of play. The Busy Beavers took on 415 Team C for the championship, Deputy Wing Command took on 415 Team A for the bronze; and the Pin Daddies took on 415 Team B to find our most honest team
In the end, the finals were close. 415 Squadron Team C proved to be the best – as they were most of the season, outplaying the Busy Beavers to a final 32 POA. Deputy Wing Command took bronze over 415 Team A by 14 POA; and, a notable mention to the Pin Daddies, who came out swinging with a 135 POA over last place 415 Team B
Season top scores, high triples and best average was a close run in the men’s side of the house, but Corporal Chris Shortliffe (Busy Beavers, 14 AMS) ended on top for all three categories (top score – 289, high triple – 767, average – 189) over Chief Warrant Officer Jamie Vallis (Deputy Wing Command). Corporal Justine Feddish (D Wg C) dominated the ladies’ side (top score – 251, high triple – 635, average – 177), but it looks like she could be up for some stiff competition next year.
It was a great season, and both the Greenwood Bowling Centre and participating bowlers hope other units will join the intersection league next Fall. Special thanks to Corporal Jason Knight (14 AMS/ Annapolis Mess representative) and Shortliffe for their help getting the intersection program back on the boards.
