“If you can understand a fear, you can overcome it.”
14 Wing Greenwood Corporal Sky Fisher opened a flag-raising event May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, encouraging Defence Team and community members gathered to “take the opportunity to take action against what we used to have problems with.
“As society moves forward, we see more resources for healthcare, trans youth, information for everyone, more trans people living their authentic lives and being treated equally. We’re lucky in our province to be treated equally, to be able to love who we love.
“And, we know there are vulnerable people trying to learn who can still make mistakes.”
The wing’s Defence Team Pride Advisory Organization hosted the event, with the DTPAO’s champion, 404 (Long Range Patrol and Training) Squadron Lieutenant-Colonel Alex Gignac thanking everyone for attending.
“People are always wondering why flags go up,” he said. “You who are here: raise the discussion with them, show your alliance and support. This is a day for us to espouse the values we have as members of the Canadian Armed Forces.”
14 Wing Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Proulx said May 17 is one day, “but it should e how we behave every day. Make sure you talk, communicate and listen. Have a wonderful day.”
Later May 17, members of the DTPAO and allies will be a visible reminder of IDAHTB, sporting rainbow-themed shirts, hats and coloured outfits during the day’s RCAF Run.
May 17 marks a global movement against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia, a reminder of the ongoing struggle for 2SLGBTQI+ rights and the importance of combatting discrimination in all its forms. It is a day to raise awareness, promote understanding and advocate for a world where everyone can live freely and authentically, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.
