April 2, 14 Wing Greenwood’s Defence Team Pride Advisory Organization hosted a flag-raising event at the base’s main gate, hoisting the transgender flag for the day in recognition of the weekend’s March 31 Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV).
“We proudly stand together as a community in the Canadian Armed Forces to honour and celebrate the contributions of our transgender service members,” said Corporal Alex Anderson, military-co-chair of the DTPAO.
“Today, we recognize and affirm the courage, strength and resilience of our transgender members who serve our country with pride and dedication.”
TDOV is internationally marked, raising awareness since 2010 about transgender people, celebrating the lives and contributions of trans people, and drawing attention to the poverty, discrimination and violence the community faces. This year, advocates and organizations promoted initiatives to counteract disinformation campaigns targeting the trans community.
“In the Canadian Armed Forces, diversity is our strength,” Anderson said. “Inclusivity is our foundation. We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where all individuals, regardless of gender identity, can thrive and excel.
“We value the unique perspectives and experiences our transgender service members bring to the table, and we are grateful for their unwavering commitment to our mission.”
