14 Wing Greenwood personnel, Defence Team members and the community are invited to attend a Battle of the Atlantic commemoration service Sunday, May 5, beginning at 10 a.m.; at St. Mark’s Chapel, Church Street, Greenwood. Dress is 1A with medals for military members.
Canada recognizes the sacrifices and achievements of all the Canadians, like those who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic, who accomplished so much and left such a lasting legacy of peace. Approximately 2,000 members of the Royal Canadian Navy were killed, all causes and theatres combined, the vast majority in the Battle of the Atlantic. Seven hundred fifty-two members of the Royal Canadian Air Force died in maritime operations as a result of enemy action and flying accidents in the unforgiving environment.
These combatants were among the more than one million men and women who served in Canada’s armed forces during the Second World War. More than 42,000 Canadians gave their lives in the war.
