14 Wing Greenwood is marking Black History Month, raising the Pan African flag February 1 at the base’s main gate to signal the start of a series of special events organized by the Defence Visible Minorities Advisory Group.
“Welcome to the kick-off,” said Wing Commander Colonel Jeff Davis, thanking everyone for coming. He encouraged all to celebrate the achievements of Black people in arts, culture, sports, workplaces and society; but to also recognize the challenges and prejudices many have faced.
“Think of those prejudices, and how we can all do better in the future.”
Chief Warrant Officer is the DVMAG’s co-champion with Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Travis. He described some of the group’s upcoming events, including movie screenings, and excursion to Pier 21 in Halifax, and a February 20 afternoon with Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard.
DVMAG military co-chair Master Corporal Matt MacKenzie encouraged attendance – and wider interest in the group’s work.
“We’re looking for people to join us, anytime. You don’t have to be a visible minority: you can be an ally. The more ideas we have at the table, the better.”
