14 Wing Greenwood’s men’s basketball team is on the road this week, heading to 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown for the Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic region championship February 26 to March 1.
Also in the field are teams from CFB Halifax and 12 Wing Shearwater.
Greenwood’s team coach is Alyssa DeAdder, 14 Wing’s Personnel Support Programs sports coordinator. The roster includes 11 athletes: Lieutenant Jonathon Wilson, Master Corporal Edrian Vlaar, Corporal Evan Trites, Corporal Wesle Aucoin, Corporal Warren Regier, Corporal Jordon Mayo, Corporal Richard Ronbeck, Aviator Dave Lubin, Lieutenant Isaiah Chua, Sailor Second Class Nicholas Chater and Aviator Tevon Wilson.
“The team has been working really hard, practicing twice a week since September, and have really been focusing on developing their skills,” says DeAdder. “It will be interesting to see what the other teams look like this year, as Halifax is always a powerhouse when it comes to basketball due to a luck of the draw with several CISM basketball players.”
Greenwood is not counting themselves out, after a strong 2023 regionals showing, just missing the finals due to catching some injuries during the tournament’s round robin.
“We’re hopeful we can make it into the finals this year, and make a run at nationals,” DeAdder says.
February 26 is the practice day for all teams, with Greenwood on the floor at 3 p.m. Captains and coaches meet at 4 p.m., followed by an evening meet and greet.
Following the 1 p.m. opening ceremony February 27, action gets underway at 1:30 p.m., as Greenwood meets Shearwater; Shearwater plays Halifax at 6: 30 p.m. Games are four 10-minute quarters, with two minutes between quarters and 10 minutes at the half.
February 28, it’s Greenwood versus Halifax at 1:30 p.m. The semi-final – second versus third – will go at 6:30 p.m.
February 29 opens with the 9 a.m. final, pitting the semi-final winner against the round robin’s first-place team. Action closes with the medals ceremony immediately following the final.
