December 7, 8 Shoreman event opportunity mark International Day for Persons with Disabilities

,

14 Wing Greenwood’s Defence Advisory Group for Persons With Disabilities will recognize December 3 as International Day for Persons with Disabilities, as guest speaker Mike Shoreman visits the wing to share his documentary, “When Hope Breaks Through.”

Come meet Shoreman, watch his story of paddling across all five Great Lakes in 2022 as an athlete with disabilities, overcoming a 2019 health crisis that left him unable to walk, and then moving through the lows and highs of a mental health journey. He used the challenge to raise funds for children and youth in crisis across Canada, and to raise awareness about mental health and persons with disabilities. This athlete and advocate is now educating and motivating audiences to achieve their own excellence, focused on mental health resilience, perseverance and drive.

The DAGPWD presentation will be offered twice at the Birchall Theatre: December 7 and 8, both 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free, and open to all members of the 14 Wing Defence Team and the wider community.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Today, the world population is over eight billion people; more than one billion people, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability. Eighty per cent live in developing countries.
