Greenwood teams run into rain interruptions, scoring headwinds
The 2026 Atlantic region slo-pitch championships weren’t meant to be for 14 Wing Greenwood’s men’s and women’s teams. Rain delays compressed both schedules and affected field use at the host 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown.
The women’s team played two games July 21, the first a 4-3 loss to the Gagetown Warriors, with Corporal Kayla Maye catching everything that came her way in left field to keep Greenwood in it – even leading; and a 9-2 loss to Formation Halifax in the evening game. Greenwood started off strong in that evening game, with a 2-0 lead and great play-making into the second inning, when Halifax had two great innings, scored nine runs and held Greenwood through the rest of the game. Greenwood’s Officer Cadet Dana Avery was a WALL at short-stop, throwing herself in front of any ball in her direction. She was a large factor in keeping Halifax from scoring for so long.
Also July 21, the Greenwood men took a 9-8 opening loss to Gagetown, but then eked out a 15-14 win against 12 Wing Shearwater. Player of the game Aviator Brody Boldt hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third to put Greenwood up 11-3.
July 23, after the rain schedule shuffle, the Greenwood women rematched against Gagetown in the semi-final, losing to finish the tournament in third place. Greenwood put up a good fight through the first couple of innings, but Gagetown came back with some great hits and aggressive base running to win the game decisively.
The men also returned to the field July 23 and took a hard 16-0 scoring beating from CFB Halifax to end up in Play-off 2 against Shearwater that afternoon. Shearwater defeated Greenwood 8-2, with the Bombers’ tournament ending with a fourth-place finish.
