Residents may notice a military presence in the Mahone Bay and Chester Basin areas from September 8 to 11, as 14 Wing Greenwood’s Explosive Disposal Flight conducts Exercise SALINE SWEEP.
Exercise SALINE SWEEP is a military operation focused on searching for Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) that may have drifted ashore. During the exercise, the public might see a rigid hull inflatable boat operating in the area or moored near islands where search activities are underway. Military personnel may also be seen conducting shoreline searches or setting up overnight camps on the islands.
There is no risk to the public associated with this exercise. No explosive materials will be brought to or used at exercise locations. In the event that personnel identify a UXO during the exercise that presents an immediate danger or threat to public safety, qualified explosive disposal personnel may be required to take appropriate action. In such circumstances, additional public notification and safety warnings will be issued.
Members of the public may continue normal recreational and boating activities while remaining aware of the operations conducted in the vicinity. Please avoid interfering with search activities.
The exercise is part of an ongoing effort to identify and assess potential hazards while supporting the safety of local communities and visitors. 14 Wing Greenwood appreciates the cooperation and support of residents, boaters, and visitors as personnel conduct this important public safety initiative.
Any suspicious objects found by the public should be reported to local police; members of the public must never attempt to handle or move unexploded ordnance.
