Soccer Bombers headed to Atlantic regionals

Summer soccer is coming to a head, as both the 14 Wing Greenwood’s men’s and women’s teams head to the Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic region tournament in Halifax August 17 to 21. Teams got in their last few practices in hot, humid conditions, but they’re ready.

Corporal Simon Landry says the men’s practices, since May, have been well-attended, with up to 20 athletes making it to the field regularly. With a few civilians, 70 per cent of the team has been playing in a Valley summer men’s league.

“We’re sitting in third place there, and the experience has definitely helped us – for sure,” Landry says. “We’re 100% better this year.”

On the women’s side, it’s an almost entirely new roster, with just a handful of returning players.

“We’ve been getting girls out – some haven’t played in a couple years and they’re now back on the field, and we’ve had postings out and in,” says team captain Corporal Breagh-Ann Campbell. “We’ve picked up most of the team this year.”

The women have also been playing in a Valley league, “getting touches on the ball, working on fitness and meshing, and just getting prepped for regionals.”

Both the men’s and the women’s tournaments happen in Halifax on the Mainland Common all-weather field #1. Winners will represent the Atlantic region at the CAF championship September 24 to 29 at CFB Borden.
