Greenwood golfers earn top Atlantic results

Four – including full women’s contingent – will join Team Atlantic at CAF nationals

14 Wing Greenwood golfers fought through wind and a shortened Atlantic region tournament July 20 to 22 to earn spots at the August Canadian Armed Forces championships for four of nine competitors.

12 Wing Shearwater hosted the regional event at the Hartlen Point Golf Club. Wind was a big factor for everyone on the course.

Day 1 July 20 “was a tough day out on the course,” said Corporal Tyler Currie. “We battled very high winds off the ocean and very fast and unforgiving greens. Greenwood is off to a good start as a team, however.”

The opening round saw, on the men’s side, Sergeant Todd McAvoy T3 shoot 79, Master Corporal Wyatt Magarvey fifth – 80, Corporal Mitch Conrod ninth – 82, Currie 15th – 85, Captain Paul Bailey T19 – 88 and Warrant Officer Shannon Green 21st – 90. The women’s team had dominant openers from Corporal Joliane Laforce first – 92, Master Corporal Natasha Philippe second – 96 and Master Corporal Cassidy Durling third – 112.

It was a “challenging day playing a course much different than we are used to, but everyone is excited to play better tomorrow – and morale is sky high.”

The Greenwood team dug deep on Day 2 July 21, with continued high winds and unpredictable greens: perseverance and grit became the story of the day. Conrod had a great round and was tied for third, shooting 82-77, followed by Magarvey in seventh 80-84, McAvoy 10th 79-87, Currie T13th 85-87, Green T18th 90-89 and Bailey 21st 88-93. The women finished the day in a comfortable lead, holding all of first, second and third: Laforce 92-92, Phillipe 96-95 and Durling 112-109.

With a weather call in the offing ahead of Day 3, rain did, in fact, cut short the tournament. The two rounds’ scores held as the final results: great news for Greenwood golfers, as all three women – Laforce, Philippe and Durling – took the top spots and will head with team Atlantic to CAF nationals August 23 to 28 at CFB Borden. On the men’s side, Conrod will also represent Greenwood with Team Atlantic.
