National Public Service Week June 14 to 20
A noon-time BBQ – with chocolate cake! – prizes and bowling into the afternoon capped off 14 Wing Greenwood’s National Public Service Week appreciation.
14 Wing Colonel Luc Vachon and Wing Chief Warrant Officer Justin Harper shared their appreciation, on behalf of the wing’s military personnel, as healthcare workers, cleaners, IT specialists, technicians, tradespeople, support services providers and others who work alongside the Canadian Armed Forces tucked in at the Greenwood Community Centre.
“The wing motto, ‘Operate as One:’ we’re talking about people who work in uniform and without,” Vachon said. “We can’t do without either.
“NORAD missions, search and rescue, long range patrol, deployments – all of these go out the door, but nothing without the whole team behind it.”
Vachon, who retires from the military in July and will “be a public servant myself in about a month-and-a-half,” said both the command team and wider military personnel cadre appreciates the professionalism and effort from their public service and civilian workforce peers.
“We have great relations with our unions, good communications and doors are open. We work hand-in-glove.”
Harper said, uniform or not, “it doesn’t mean we don’t need what you’re bringing to the table – it’s a partnership. Twenty-two hundred and change people are here on the wing? That includes you. You matter, you’re the resilience and the connective tissue. We have a deep appreciation for everyone.”
This year’s National Public Service Week runs June 14 to 20, with the theme, “Past and present, your service matters.”
