From May 4 to 6, the Greenwood Bowling Centre cheered on five of their own, as YBC Greenwood went up against some of the most amazing youth bowlers from across the country competing at the Youth Bowl Canada Nationals in Winnipeg.
Five Greenwood youth bowlers were at the event, part of Team Nova Scotia.
In Senior Boys’ Singles, Logan Zizek bowled through a hard fought battle to obtain 19 points over his average all week with a 159.3 average, and bowled a season’s best games of 215.
In Junior Girls’, Harper MacNeil bowled a solid 18 points over her season’s average, with a 107.6 average; she missed her season’s best by only a few points, hitting a high score of 133 at nationals.
In Junior Boys’, Ethan Layne, the Greenwood contingent’s most experienced bowler, rocked 28 points over his season’s average, with a 217.7 average through the week; in one game, he bowled a near-perfect game, with nine strikes in a row before punching a headpin in the 10th frame, earning him a season high score and personal best of 387.
In Bantam Girls’, Finleigh MacNeil also bowled 19 points over her season average, finishing with a 112.4 average. She missed her season’s best game by only one point, with a score of 170.
In Bantam Boys’, Jax Noseworthy pushed through with some new techniques: he had to adapt to a cast on his balancing arm. He finished the tournament with an average of 112.4, 14 points over his season, and was able to hit a high game of 153.
Team NS coaches Greg Noseworthy and Odessa Taylor definitely had their hands full through the week, but youth bowlers, club programs and athlete families can’t thank them enough for the outstanding job they did mentoring and supporting bowlers as they achieved exceptional results.
Greenwood youth bowling is sanctioned through Bowl Canada and the Youth Bowl Canada (YBC) national program, which provides a safe, friendly, social and exciting environment for youth ages five to 19. Everyone plays (and no one rides the bench) in local YBC leagues. Bowlers could travel for various events, including the Confederation Cup, a Martime mixed team tournament set for Gagetown in October (Greenwood hopes to host in 2027); the provincial championships, in Greenwood, in December; and, potentially, bowlers could represent Team Nova Scotia at the YBC Nationals in Oshawa in the Spring of 2027. Plus, bowlers ages 12 to 19 are invited to the NS/ NB Provincial Youth Challenge in Gagetown and could earn a spot to compete with Team NS/ NB at the Canadian 5-Pin Bowling Association’s National Youth Challenge in Spring 2027.
