The Earth loves you; love it back

Canadian Environment Week is back this year at 14 Wing Greenwood, with awareness and events from May 31 to June 6!

Since 1971, Canadian Environment Week celebrates Canada’s environmental efforts and encourages Canadians from coast to coast to coast to protect and conserve our environment. Canada has been helping tackle issues including plastic waste, protection of biodiversity and pollution prevention. Did you know the Government of Canada has committed to conservation measures for 30 per cent of Canada’s lands, lakes and oceans by 2030? That’s over 3,933,688 km2 of protected areas, bigger than the size of India!

Over the course of environment week, special days include Canada’s Clean Air Day June 4, and the United Nations’ World Environment Day June 5, with the theme calling for global climate action.

Here in Canada, we are already witnessing effects from climate change with more frequent and extreme events, such as wildfires and floods. Environment and Climate Change Canada expects a greater than 99 per cent chance 2026 will be hotter than every year on record prior to 2023. These major shifts have an impact on us all, which is why taking action is so important.

Climate action can take all shapes and forms. In the community, efforts like opting to get around by public mass transit, bike or on foot can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save on gas. Or, at home, washing clothes in cold water can reduce washing machines’ energy consumption and lower your utility bill. Taking time to learn about different environmental impacts and issues can help build awareness. At 14 Wing, every effort, big or small, helps protect the environment and support a sustainable future for generations to come.
