Military children’s service ‘seen, understood’

14 Wing teals up, marking April as Month of the Military Child

Military children are “troopers,” says 14 Wing Greenwood Colonel Luc Vachon.

“Folks that have families, including myself: take a moment to pause. Our children did not sign up, but their service to Canada includes moving, new friends, new schools; extremely difficult and flexible and unpredictable environments.”

Vachon, with Wing Chief Warrant Officer Justin Harper, raised the teal flag for April as the Month of the Military Child at the base’s main gate April 23. The event was organized by Military Family Services, one of a whole calendar of activities throughout the month, ending Saturday, April 25, with a walk, art canvas painting, family-friendly activities and pizza lunch (Event link).

“Parents – go home, give a good squeeze and hug to your kids and give them the appreciation they deserve,” said Vachon.

Harper said military children are part of the fabric of support for military members’ service. He thanked the wing’s partners – MFS, day care, youth and family program organizers – for their continuing efforts to include and support children.

MFS family liaison Kelly McLean was a military child, and is now the parent of two military children.

“Transitions, starting over, time apart – and all the changes in between,” she said. “Those build strength and adaptability, but it’s important those children feel seen and understood by their community.”

The teal-coloured flag comes from a blending of colours – air force blue, army green and navy white; it also includes a dandelion graphic, as the tough, abundant little flowering weed puts down hardy and resilient roots everywhere.
