The second season of 14 Wing intersection five pin bowling wrapped up March 26, with a day of round robin and playoff games.
This year’s league tripled in size, with 75 players from six different units competing in regular season play and 40 players competing in the play off tournament. 14 Air Maintenance Squadron, 405 (Long Range Patrol) Squadron, 14 Mission Support Squadron, 14 Operations Support Squadron, 415 (Long Range Patrol Force Development) Squadron, and Deputy Wing Command all sent multiple four player teams to see who could come out on top.
Major Gillian Rideout, the league OPI, organized the play using “pins over average” (POA) scoring. It was a dynamic field for the first few weeks of play, but 415 Squadron quickly rose to the top of the field – and stayed there – throughout 19 weeks of regular season play. As the previous season’s winners, all other units were quick to set their sights on de-throning 415 Squadron: Deputy Wing Command almost took the lead at one point, but 415 Squadron just managed to hang on.
For the play-off round robin, there were three teams from 415 Squadron, two teams from 14 AMS, two teams from 14 MSS and one team from DWComd. As the March 26 final day progressed, results were all over the board. At the end of five games of round robin play, 415 Team A ended on top with +290 POA, followed in second by 415 Team C at +252 POA. Behind them was MSS Team A with +114 POA, AMS Team A at +69 POA, AMS Team B at +65 POA, 415 Team C at +60 POA, MSS Team B at -1 POA, and the most honest team, DWComd, at -289 POA.
This set up for an interesting final game, as 415 Team C had its eye on taking the trophy from the defending champions playing on 415 Team A. At the end of the day, Team A couldn’t hold off the challengers and Team C took the title, outscoring their opponents by +83 POA. MSS team A took bronze with +40 POA over AMS team A.
The season’s top scores, high triples and high average placements were a constant battle on the men’s side. Eventually, Corporal Chris Shortliffe (14 AMS) landed on top with a high average of 196. Chief Warrant Officer Jamie Vallis (DWComd) landed the high single, with an eye-watering 366 and high triple of 760. On the ladies’ side, play was mostly dominated by two individuals: Corporal Carrie Laycock (14 AMS) took the high average with 144, while Major Gillian Rideout (415 Squadron) had the high single of 194 and high triple of 514.
It was an excellent intersection season, and both the Greenwood Bowling Centre and participating bowlers are excited to get back at it in Fall 2026.
