14 Wing Greenwood’s regional curling representatives had a tough go at the Atlantic military tournament March 11 to 13.
After a pretty successful winter season playing in the Berwick Curling Club’s Sunday evening recreational league, with the opportunity to shape a team from interested 14 Wing players – and find Warrant Officer Matthew Spinney, from 5 Canadian Division Support Base Detachment Aldershot, also in the league; Greenwood was prepared for the regional tournament, hosted by 12 Wing Shearwater. The full roster included Captain Paul Bailey, Corporal Tyrell Keicks, Corporal Justin Sudsbear, Major Jeff McRae McRae and Spinney.
Opening day, March 11, Keicks was out of action, ill at home. Greenwood opened their tournament with a 6-5 loss against CFB Halifax, and followed that afternoon with a tough game against 12 Wing Shearwater. For a time, though, Greenwood held the closest “Last Stone Draw” to the button (thrown at the end of each pregame practice). And, Keicks joined the team-proclaimed “fearsome four” that afternoon as moral support, still ailing.
March 12 Greenwood met 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in the last of the round robin, taking a third loss, and ended up curling against Gagetown in that afternoon’s losing semifinal. Keicks was unable to play in any of the games.
