Look up Wednesday, January 21, and watch as the venerable CC130 Hercules leaves 14 Wing Greenwood for the last time. The Royal Canadian Air Force’s fixed-wing search and rescue aircraft – since 1960 – is heading into retirement, being replaced to “watch the waves” by the new CC295 Kingfisher.
413 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron personnel have been busy for the past year training for the new Kingfisher’s technical, maintenance and operational needs; it has officially assumed the fixed-wing search and rescue role at 14 Wing.
With its distinctive upswept tail, the flat grey Herc has been used for tactical transport, air-to-air refueling and search and rescue operations; here, on Canada’s East Coast, saving lives for decades through severe weather, over a vast territory and in the hands of a team of aviation professionals.
