14 Wing offers airfield experience in sprint, try-a-tri August 30 triathlon event

A 14 Wing Greenwood-hosted public triathlon August 30 is offering ideal route options for first-timers, sites to see en route for participants and detailed support for everyone involved.

This is a Triathon Nova Scotia series event, with two options. The sprint triathlon (registration $50) includes a 750 metre swim, a 20 kilometre bike and a 5km run. The Try-a-Tri offering (registration $40) consists of a 300m swim, 11km bike and 3km run. The sprint event may be done as an individual, or in three-person relay teams (registration $75). Competition will base from Church Street (closed between 8 a.m. and noon race day), with the base’s outdoor pool, space for all three race component transition zones, and the start and finishing lines for components and the full races.

Once athletes are out of the pool, the bike and run portions of the triathlon will let you know you’re on Canada’s largest East Coast Royal Canadian Air Force base. The bike course will loop riders through the base’s mission support area and out to the Greenwood Golf Club, alongside the ZX airfield. Watch for static displays of the wing’s CP140 Aurora, CC130 Hercules, CH149 Cormorant helicopter and the CC295 Kingfisher parked along the airfield fenceline. The running route distances will take competitors in the opposite direction, running Ad Astra Way along the airfield to Checkpoint Charlie. Through it all, 14 Wing aircraft will continue operations, taking off and landing on the nearby airfield.

Organizers describe this triathlon’s race options as great for beginners, or those looking for a personal best: a flat bike and run course will ensure fast time potential.
