From May 27 to 29, 14 Wing Greenwood hosted staff from RCAF W/C William G. Barker VC Aerospace College, offering the school’s Character Application and Transformation Course.
Taking place in the Birchall Centre, the course brought together members representing different trades and ranks from across 14 Wing and 5th Canadian Division Support Group Garrison Aldershot.
Delivered by 14 Wing’s Major Melissa Bryan and Barker College’s Captain Kayla Hobday and Sergeant Justin Roberge, the course enables sustained operational advantage, emphasizing the elevation of individual and collective character.
14 Wing Colonel Luc Vachon and Wing Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Proulx welcomed Barker College staff and course participants. Reflecting on relevant experiences, Vachon shared how the contents of the course have helped him navigate situations through his own career. The course is about “creating an environment that fosters trust,” said Vachon. Trust is an important aspect of any team and organization. The course helps to understand “the why.”
Over the three days, students explored different models of organizational and personal psychology, philosophy, communication and facilitation skills. Receiving various tools and tips to view themselves and others through a character and personality lens, members became better equipped to support their teams and units, the Canadian Armed Forces’ mission and more.
With the successful completion of the course, 14 Wing and Barker College now hope to collaborate again, delivering courses and content beneficial to Defence Team members in the region.
Barker College, since 2018, offers a range of professional development programs for the Royal Canadian Air Force, training almost 2,000 RCAF personnel annually through distance and residential learning. Content aims to further RCAF aerospace capability development, including electronic warfare, space operations, human performance in military aviation, modelling and simulation.
