Team effort at ’25 women’s regionals

The 2025 Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic region women’s hockey tournament turned into a true team effort February 11 and 12.

Hosted by 12 Wing Shearweater, the Formation Halifax Mariners, with players from both 12 Wing and CFB Halifax; and the 14 Wing Greenwood Raiders, with players from both Greenwood and 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown; met for a best-of-three event.

Game one February 11 saw Halifax take a 2-0 lead in the first period, hold for a 3-2 lead through the second period and take the win with a 4-3 score over Greenwood.

Game two February 12, a fluky goal in the first period put Halifax up over Greenwood 1-0. Greenwood worked through the second period, getting 20 shots on goal to Halifax’s 17; the period ended 2-1 for Halifax. The Mariners went up to 3-1 in the third period. Greenwood couldn’t take advantage of the first of two four-minute power plays, but did score on the second to get to 3-2, with 39 seconds left in the game. Halifax scored on an empty Greenwood net in the very last seconds, making it 4-2 and taking the CAF Atlantic title. Greenwood managed 32 shots on goal to Halifax’s 22.

Halifax will now represent the Atlantic region at Canadian Armed Forces women’s hockey nationals March 21 to 27 at CFB Trenton. Two 14 Wing athletes have been added to the representative roster: Master Corporal Natasha  Philippe and Aviator Brianna Cyr.
