A Valley-based arts couple, James Lightle and Jaime Lee Lightle, have a hand in two new exhibits opening April 5 at ARTSPLACE, a public art gallery in Annapolis Royal.
“Honest Animals” is a lively collection of illustrated animal caricatures by the Lightles. Showcasing over 50 works from their book, “Honest Animals Talk: A Cheeky Commentary for a Post-Pandemic World,” this display offers an imaginative and entertaining lens on Canadian culture. The exhibition will feature 20 framed original pen and watercolour pieces, alongside 30 unframed matted originals.
“What began as an online blog quickly resonated with readers who enjoyed the humour and authenticity of these characters,” says Jaime Lee.
The second group show, “The Masks I Wear,” features a collection of mixed media masks made by participants of Life Through a Mask: An Introduction to Expressive Arts Therapy with military Personnel, veterans and their families; a four-week program hosted at Nova 7 Arts in Greenwood and funded by Veterans Affairs from 2020 to 2025. The artists’ masks represent one’s persona, which often refers to the practical and successful personality we use most of the time in the workplace and social relationships.
James C.E. Lightle, a retired Canadian Armed Forces combat engineer, originally from Port Hope, Ontario; turned to art after sustaining injuries in Afghanistan, when his vehicle was struck by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) in 2006. He is a self-published author and visual artist committed to storytelling. Jaime Lee Lightle, a native of Ottawa, is an artist, author and registered art therapist. She is currently collaborating on community-based projects, delivering art therapy in the Annapolis area. In 2015, the Lightles opened Round Hill Studio (roundhillstudio.com), outside Annapolis Royal.
“Honest Animals” and “The Masks I Wear” open with a joint reception April 5, noon to 2 p.m.; the exhibition continues through May 24. ARTSPLACE is operated by the Annapolis Region Community Arts Council, at 396 St. George Street in Annapolis Royal.
