After two weeks of Atlantic region volleyball action, 14 Wing Greenwood now turns its attention to basketball, hosting the 2025 men’s hoops championship March 17 to 21.
On the court are the 2024 defending regional – and national – Canadian Armed Forces champions, the 14 Wing Bombers. Joining them are the CFB Halifax Mariners, the 12 Wing Shearwater Flyers and the 5 Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown Warriors.
“From the team at nationals last year, two members were pick-ups and four or five members have since been posted out,” says Captain Jon Wilson. Despite a competitive perspective as a CISM-level basketball athlete himself, he’s looking at this year’s practice and regional process as an opportunity.
“We’re re-building, and there’s no nationals this year. Our ambition is to re-build, keeping at it for nationals next year,” Wilson says. “We’ve had small numbers for our practices through the winter, from a high school player coming out to join us to CISM, but this is all part of Canadian Armed Forces life: there are always changes.
“We’ll be going to regionals, and we’ll be competing.”
Team coach Alyssa DeAdder, 14 Wing’s Personnel Support Program sports coordinator, is back with the team: she coached the 2024 national championship team, the first woman to lead a men’s team to a CAF title.
With regionals on their home court and with an all-evenings schedule due to officials’ availability, the Bombers are looking forward to seeing fans – including family – come out to cheer them on.
“This is going to be enjoyable – basketball is fun! It’s a unique sport, everyone is so different and there’s so many ways to play. And, sports in the CAF are meant to be for fun, too.”
