Student tour highlights wing work, team work

14 Wing Greenwood hosted its annual Take Our Kids to Work Day November 7, welcoming approximately 40 Grade 9 students from across the region. The event gave youth a unique look at life on a military base, showcasing the teamwork that drives 14 Wing operations. Parents and guardians who work at 14 Wing were excited to show students not only their own workplaces, but also those of their colleagues.

The day began at 8 a.m. with a warm welcome from the command team. Colonel Luc Vachon expressed his hope the students would find inspiration in seeing how various teams work together to achieve their goals.

The first stop was 14 Wing’s fire hall to learn about a number of specialized emergency response services. Students explored a static display of fire trucks, a police cruiser and the base ambulance; and had the opportunity to speak with firefighters, Military Police officers and medics, gaining insight into the essential emergency, law enforcement and medical services on the base.

Next, the group visited 413 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron, touring the squadron’s aircraft and learning about the different roles that keep the squadron running smoothly. Students interacted with maintenance personnel, flight operators and others involved in the squadron’s work.

At the top of the aircraft control tower, students saw firsthand how air traffic operations are managed and how airspace is kept safe. Control tower staff emphasized the precision and teamwork required in aviation.

After a busy morning, students and their guardians enjoyed a well-deserved break with Individual Meal Packs (IMPs), warmed up by the Replenishment cell at the Annapolis Mess.

Some of the highlights identified by students was the wide range of military trades available, and how they all collaborate to keep the base running. The experience also provided students with the opportunity to spend a day away from the classroom with their families and guardians.

Master Corporal Glen Barnes, this year’s tour organizer, expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to tour stops and presentations, noting the day marked one of the first large-scale Take Our Kids to Work Day events held on the wing since the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a day full of learning, exploration, new connections and, of course, smiles.
