Semi-final loses for both the 14 Wing Greenwood soccer teams at Canadian Armed Forces’ regional championships prevented a repeat title for the women and ended a return with potential for the men. All the action took place at Dartmouth’s Harbour East All Weather Field.
The women took a 2-0 opening loss to CFB Halifax on opening day August 20 and a 1-0 loss that same afternoon to 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown. The women’s Day 1, team-selected MVPs included Captain Sophia King and Master Corporal Kate Walker (Game 1), and Aviator Kas Selwood and Captain Danielle Beland (Game 2).
The 14 Wing women next played August 22, a must-win semi-final rematch against Gagetown. They hung on in a tough game, 1-1, until Gagetown made a late penalty kick to take the win – and the spot in the August 23 final. Greenwood’s goal came from Corporal Brandi Weibel.
The women’s final was a 3-0 win for Halifax over Gagetown.
The 14 Wing men opened August 20, also meeting Halifax. With one goal from Corporal Stephen Best, the men lost 4-1. In the next day’s game, they took a 3-0 loss to Gagetown, also looking for a semi-final win to advance to the championship.
In that semi, 14 Wing lost 3-0 in a hard-fought match against Halifax: the score did NOT reflect the effort.
The men’s final was an extra time game (two 15-minute sets) to try and break a 1-1 finish, followed by a 5-4 shoot-out win for Gagetown over Halifax.
