It’s not very busy in the Annapolis Mess’ Tow Bar Wednesday evenings, as members of the Greenwood Board Game Group begin to arrive. The bartender offers a friendly greeting and takes any orders. Sara or Lisa are normally the first to arrive, weighed down by three or four large bags stuffed full of different board games from their home collections. Other group members, guests and newcomers arrive, often adding their own games to the variety available for play.
The Greenwood Board Game Group meets Wednesdays, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Started back in 2022 by a few people who shared a passion for board games, the adults-only group is open to anyone who shares their passion: military members or their spouses, friends or even family from out of town. Meeting at the 19-plus Tow Bar has its advantages: ample space, comfy seating and friendly bar staff who serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Gone are the days where “Scrabble,” “Monopoly” or “Battleship” may have been your only choices. Now, you might decide between “Ticket to Ride” or “Settlers of Catan;” or, you could try lesser-known gems like “Isle of Cats,” “Robo Rally” or “Wyrmspan.” Sometimes a member will bring in a totally new game the rest of the group has never heard of before. It’s safe to say board games have been experiencing something of a resurgence, and it might take you by surprise to learn just how much choice is out there.
All the games are member-owned, brought in from home for everyone to enjoy. There are always a few regulars and drop-ins on games night, and people who happen to be in the Mess and wander by are welcome to join in. The atmosphere is non-competitive and casual, with an emphasis on having fun and enjoying yourself as you try a new game and meet new people, or catch-up with some you haven’t seen since the last meet-up. Don’t worry if you become overwhelmed by a game or confused by the rules: you only need to ask for help, as many of the regulars are incredibly knowledgeable and happy to explain a game or answer any questions.
The variety of games is staggering – far too many on offer to fit into a single night. The choice is what keeps you coming back! There is always something new to play, a new game to experience, a new adventure to be had….
