Birthday milestone opportunity to return to 405 Squadron

Master Warrant Officer (retired) Herb Townsend returned to 14 Wing Greenwood March 21, marking another birthday milestone with a visit to his former 405 Squadron.

Townsend, arriving at the base as part of his 90th birthday celebrations, was toured by 405 Squadron members through squadron space and aboard the CP140 Aurora inside the hangar, then treated with cake and a certificate, presented by 405 (Long Range Patrol) Squadron Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Dan Arsenault.

Townsend, born in Lockeport, Nova Scotia, originally joined the Army in 1958 as a military policeman. Several years later, he re-mustered to administration and was posted to Petawawa in 1967. Two years later, he again re-mustered to AESOP and subsequently posted to 880 Squadron flying Trackers.1976 saw him posted to 405 Squadron in Greenwood, followed by three years in recruit school in Cornwallis. He returned to 405 Squadron from 1980 to 1990, when he retired March 20, 1991, after 30 years of combined service – and nine varying ranks.

During retirement, Townsend ran a Christian bookstore and, at age 70, he become an ordained minister, preaching full time until he turned 80. He continues to preach and conduct services part-time and when required. He lives in Meadowvale.
