‘Everyone who does everything’ thanked at museum volunteer lunch

14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Jeff Davis knows the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum is an impressive testament to local military aviation heritage – but its volunteer corps is likely where the magic happens.

“Every time I go to the museum, I’m always impressed and amazed at the energy there – I wish I could bottle all of that!” he said, as GMAM volunteers gathered for an appreciation pizza lunch at the VP International centre June 22.

“You are the preserver of our story, and you’re going to evolve that story for years to come. That’s extremely important.”

Davis described the volunteers’ efforts as tied to the wing’s goals, to work with “purpose, vision and tenacity.

“And you have new volunteers coming,” he said, pointing to several younger military members now lending a hand to cleaning, restoration and project work. “It is so difficult to find people to participate and volunteer: please be an ambassador, and talk to your peers at work about how they can share and show off their skills on the other side of the gate.”

GMAM Society chairman Ian Patrick highlighted many of the museum’s achievements as it grew over 30 years, from its original 1,100 square feet in the VPI building to over 10,000 square feet in its current home. With an annex of Second World War aircraft and collection material, an outdoor space including the airpark, an observation tower, memorial garden and monument walk; and Flight Education program for Grade 6 students, “it’s amazing what volunteers have done. This is a major tourist attraction – up to 20,000 people a year.

“I can look around this room and see everyone who does everything – such a diversity of people, some of the best we’ve had. Capable, fun, friendly – with the support of the wing, we can do anything.”
