United under Black History Month flag

14 Wing Greenwood raised the Pan African flag this morning at the main gate, a symbol to mark the real work needed to “march forward in unity.”

The Defence Racialized Persons Advisory Group lead the event, with Sailor First Class Kianna Johnson urging wing leadership and peers, family and community to attend February’s special events marking Black History Month, including the flag-raising and an art show later this month.

“Black History Month is an opportunity to show a shared purpose and highlight unity. I hope this year to be working more with a wing that certainly supports Black History Month, creating opportunities to celebrate the excellence within Black military personnel.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Alex Gignac thanked Johnson, and recognized the importance of her perspective for the work the wing continues to need to do.

“There should be no organization that does this work better than the Canadian Armed Forces: we should be doing it to know ourselves better, and to fight better together.”

Wing Chief Warrant Officer Justin Harper agreed.

“The wing hears you, and we’re excited to see what we build here from the connective tissue of 400 years of Black presence in Nova Scotia. At the end of the day, we’re doing better – and there is a lot more we can do. There is no room for not integrating all of us together, marching forward in unity.”
