Friday, February 27, the 14 Wing Greenwood Defence Racialized Persons Advisory Group presents a Roots Reggae live music celebration at the Annapolis Mess. The concert marks the conclusion of Black History Month, and features special guests Jah’Mila, King Kayo and friends.

Jah’Mila is a reggae singer hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, who now calls Nova Scotia home. Her music embodies the spirit of traditional Jamaican roots, infused with elements of jazz and soul. Her Juno-nominated 2022 debut album, “Roots Girl,” is a spirited collection of reggae songs that not only honours her cultural roots, but also serves as a platform for social advocacy. Jah’Mila as toured with renowned reggae acts including The Wailers, Black Uhuru and Groundation; and she has collaborated with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia.

Halifax resident King Kayo has an unmistakable Caribbean-rooted sound and community-focused spirit, all grounded from his early years growing up amid Saint Lucia’s social and cultural tensions. Not into sports, King Kayo turned an early ear for poetry into a musical identity in rap. He came to Halifax to attend Saint Mary’s University, grew into the local music scene on his own and through collaborations with Quake Matthews, Littles the General and Classified. In 2024, he won the ECMA R&B/ Soul Recording of the Year, and, in 202, both the NSMA Artist of the Year and Music Nova Scotia’s DJ of the Year awards.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. February 27. This is a 19+ event with free admission, and the bar is cash/ card.
