Ruck 4 Remembrance puts first responders’, supporters’, boots on the ground

Twenty-two kilometres with 22 kilograms on your back: that’s the goal of participants in the November 9 Ruck 4 Remembrance: Honoring the Route Home, starting and finishing from 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown Detachment Aldershot.

Organized by volunteers, this fourth Valley-based Ruck 4 Remembrance is a grassroots effort to fundraise for Wounded Warriors Canada but, more importantly, “connect the dots” between serving first responders and veterans, community resources and organizations, and professional organizations all working to build a healthy, safe environment for individuals, and their families, dealing with service-related injuries.

“A ruck is a great piece of what many of us miss,” says co-organizer Brent Platt. “The walk brings people to a good place. Whether you carry the 22 kilograms – or not!”

Platt and the organizing team are working with leadership at Camp Aldershot, which will host the gathering and registration activities from 7:30 a.m., and the provide transport for all participants from the base to the Royal Canadian Legion Dr CB Lumsden Branch 74 Wolfville. From there, participants will ruck along main routes, making stops at RCMP and police stations, volunteer fire departments and Legion branches in Wolfville, New Minas and Kentville

“We’ve done this in as little as three hours, but it could be six hours – we walk at the slowest pace, and we all walk together,” Platt says.
