October 16 marks International Conflict Resolution Day

Conflict is a natural part of any workplace, but knowing how to address it effectively can make all the difference. If you’re ever unsure about what steps to take, who to turn to, or how to resolve an issue, support is available. October 16 marks International Conflict Resolution Day; a timely reminder the Conflict and Complaint Management Services (CCMS) is here to help members of the Defence Team and the (newly integrated) Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) navigate challenges and foster healthier work environments.

CCMS is a resource available to all members of the Defence Team, whether you’re bringing forward a concern, responding to a complaint, or seeking guidance on how to address workplace conflict. The team supports members with submitting, tracking and resolving complaints, while also promoting constructive approaches to conflict management.

Learning how to manage conflict effectively is an essential skill. It strengthens teams, improves productivity, and creates a culture where members feel valued, respected and engaged.

The Chief, Professional Conduct and Culture’s Conflict and Complaint Management Services (CCMS) provide direct support to Defence Team members in resolving workplace disputes. They also assist chains of command by offering insights into workplace dynamics and identifying potential systemic issues that may need attention.

To help Defence Team members better understand the services available to them, CCMS offers “About CCMS” information sessions. These sessions provide an overview of CCMS resources, explain how the team can assist when workplace conflict arises, and outline the support available to both employees and leadership.

  • Sessions are delivered via MS Teams webinars and are open to Canadian Armed Forces members and Department of National Defence public service employees
  • Registration is required as spaces are limited. Registration Link

Members are also encouraged to view the video Navigating Difficult Conversations in Workplace Conflict Resolution. This resource features two experts in the field: Melanie Michaud, Associate Ombuds and Director of the Informal Conflict Management System at the Department of Justice, and elected champion of the Federal Informal Conflict Management System (2020); and Geneviève Lord, Director General of Conflict Solutions and Services within the Chief of Professional Conduct and Culture team. The video offers practical guidance on how to approach difficult conversations in today’s increasingly diverse workplace.

Local support is available through 16 CCMS offices located at bases and wings across the country. Each office is staffed with professionals who may guide Defence Team members and leaders through both formal and informal conflict resolution processes.

Being well-equipped to manage conflict when it arises is essential for maintaining a respectful, productive, and resilient workplace. By addressing issues early and constructively, Defence Team members can prevent small concerns from escalating, strengthen working relationships, and ensure every voice is heard. With the right tools and support, conflict can become an opportunity for growth, both for individuals and for the Defence Team as a whole.
