CAF Atlantic gold, silver for 14 Wing women, men’s teams

Five 14 Wing Greenwood golfers shot their way around the Canadian Armed Forces Atlantic regional tournament, earning spots on the team that now heads to September’s Canadian Armed Forces nationals at CFB Borden.

CFB Gagetown hosted the HOT regional action July 16 to 18, with daily playing temperatures in the mid- to high 30s.

Greenwood’s men’s team included Master Corporal Todd McAvoy, Corporal Tyler Currie, Corporal Wyatt Magarvey, Corporal Tristan Tobin, Corporal Ryan Woodrow and Major Joe Antle. The women’s tea included Major Mary Cameron-Kelly, Master Corporal Natasha Phillipe, Corporal Joliane Laforce and Corporal Cassidy Durling.

In Day 1 action July 16, on the men’s side, McAvoy shot a 78 and tied for second, Currie shot an 81 and tied for sixth, Magarvey shot an 82 and tied for eighth, Tobin shot an 83 and tied for 10th, Woodrow shot a 90 and was in 20th place, and Antle shot a 95 and sat in 23rd spot. On the women’s side, Greenwood’s four all put in top-10 scores: Cameron-Kelly shot an 88 to sit in first place, Phillipe shot a 94 to place second, Laforce shot a 95 for third and Durling shot a 115 to sit in seventh place.

July 17’s Day 2 round move down a place to third after a 79 in the second round, Currie shot an 81 to sixth place, Magarvey shot an 81 and moved up one place to seventh, Tobin shot an 85 for 11th place, Woodrow shot an 84 and moved up two spots to sit in 18th, and Antle shot an 88 and also moved up two spots, to tie for 21st. On the women’s side, Cameron-Kelly continued to hold first place, shooting an 80; Laforce shot a 97 and moved up a spot to second, Philippe shot a 101 and dropped one spot to third place, and Durling shot a 116, moving up one spot to sit in sixth place.

Through the final windy-day round July 18, the 14 Wing women’s contingent won the gold medal, with three athletes sweeping the top three spots. Cameron-Kelly shot an 87, holding first through all three rounds to lead the pack. Laforce shot a 93 in the final round to take second overall, and Philippe shot a 101 to finish third overall. Durling rounded out the team’s results, finishing in seventh place overall.

The Greenwood men’s team took silver to CFB Halifax’s first-place finish. McAvoy shot a 77 in the final round, finishing second overall, Currie shot an 83 and finished sixth overall, followed by Magarvey with an 83 in seventh place, Tobin’s 91 to place 16th, Woodrow’s 86 to finish 17th and Antle’s final round 84 to finish 19th.

McAvoy, Currie, Cameron-Kelly, Laforce and Philippe are now off with Team Atlantic to September’s CAF nationals at CFB Borden.
